FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTION
Quick answers to common questions about APEL.A at UNIMAS.
1. What is the purpose of APEL.A?
APEL.A is defined as a systematic process that involves the identification, documentation and evaluation of prior experiential learning — including knowledge, skills and attitudes — to determine the extent to which an individual has achieved the desired learning outcomes, either for admission to a study programme or the award of credits.
APEL.A provides opportunities for individuals with work experience but limited or no formal academic qualifications to further their studies at Higher Education Providers (HEP). The assessment reviews learning gained through both formal education and prior experiences.
2. How do I apply for APEL?
Applications can be made online via: www2.mqa.gov.my/APEL
3. What are the application criteria for APEL.A?
- Master’s Degree (APEL T-7): Applicants must be 30 years old or above in the year of application, hold STPM/Diploma or other recognised equivalent qualifications, and have relevant work experience.
- Bachelor’s Degree (APEL T-6): Applicants must be 21 years old or above as of 1 January in the year of application and have relevant work experience.
- Diploma (APEL T-4): Applicants must be 20 years old or above as of 1 January in the year of application and have relevant work experience.
- Certificate (APEL T-3): Applicants must be 19 years old or above as of 1 January in the year of application and have relevant work experience.
4. What levels of study can be applied for using APEL.A?
Currently, APEL.A in Malaysia is intended only for admission to Higher Education Providers (HEP) and is available for four entry levels:
- Certificate (APEL T-3)
- Diploma (APEL T-4)
- Bachelor’s Degree (APEL T-6)
- Master’s Degree (APEL T-7)
5. Is the APEL.A certificate equivalent to an academic qualification at an HEP?
No. An APEL certificate can only be used for admission purposes to Higher Education Providers. It is not an academic qualification award like those granted by formal academic programmes, and it cannot be used for employment purposes.
Example: An APEL certificate at the Master’s level (T-7) can only be used to apply for admission to a Master’s programme at an HEP. It does not confer a Master’s qualification.
6. Which programmes accept APEL.A for admission?
All programmes offered at Higher Education Providers (HEP) may accept APEL.A for admission. However, programmes regulated by professional bodies are subject to the specific requirements of those bodies.
For Master’s Degree applications (APEL T-7), there are 30 approved study fields listed by MQA: http://www2.mqa.gov.my/APEL/APEL_A/CheckDaftar.cfm
